Red Squirrels

Pest Control: How to Get Rid of Red Squirrels

There is a wide variety of techniques used when trying to solve a red squirrel problem, most depend on the time of year and situation. Some of the most common techniques used include live trapping and relocations, the use of one way door over entry points with sealing after the squirrel has vacated. Biological or commercially made deterrents either by themselves or used in conjunction with the 1 way door is also an effective technique. We recommend an initial inspection of the problem to determine the most effective technique. In some cases immediate removal (ie: netting or catching) is available.

How to Identify a Red Squirrel Infestation

  • Red squirrels can be identified from other squirrels in North American by their smaller size, territorial behaviour and reddish fur with a white underbelly
  • Red squirrels are somewhat larger than chipmunks and usually weigh between 200 and 250 g
  • Red Squirrels are part of the rodent family and need to chew to keep their teeth down as their teeth continually grow until death. Squirrels often chew wires, window and door frames and even wall studs
  • Red Squirrels are known to dig up gardens and damage fruit trees and vegetable gardens
  • Red Squirrels will strip the bark from trees and other plants
  • You might hear noises that come from squirrels running, scratching or fighting with each other. Usually, these noises will come from squirrels in the attic, walls, chimney or vents

How to Prevent a Red Squirrel Infestation

  • Inspect your home and fill in any holes that could be used as a possibly entry point
  • Trim or remove tree branches that are within 8-10 feet of the roof of your house. This keeps squirrels from jumping from the tree to your house roof
  • Remove bird feeders that can serve as a source of food and attractant for squirrels
  • If possible, avoid planting oak and hickory trees to reduce the amount of nuts or seed that could attract squirrels

Possible Health Concerns

  • Squirrels are a carrier of fleas, ticks, mites and parasitic worms such as round and tape worms. As with all the other wild animals, they should only be handled by trained professionals
  • If experiencing health complications after handling a red squirrel or their droppings please contact your healthcare provider and advise that you have been handling the above so proper medical intervention can occur

About Red Squirrels

  • The Red Squirrel is distributed throughout North America from Alaska, East to Quebec, South as far as South Carolina, and over to New Mexico
  • The female is usually ready to mate at one year old and can produce up to 2 litters annually
  • Red squirrels feed on a variety of things from pine and spruce seeds to mushrooms, meat, sap and bird eggs as well as nestlings
  • Red squirrels are active by day mostly with the exception of bright moon lit nights
  • Red squirrels are a solitary animal except during mating season; they are also very territorial and will readily fight other squirrels that intrude on their home range, which usually is less than a 200 yd. radius
